Top Ten Tuesday (2)

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and Bookish. Each week, there is a different topic, and it's answered in the form of a top ten list.

This week's theme is "Top Ten Books I'd Give To Readers Who Have Never Read X." I'm choosing Young Adult as my genre.

These are my picks (in no particular order) for readers who have never read Young Adult literature before:

  • Wonder by R.J. Palacio because it tells the story of a boy who knows that being accepted in school and society will be hard for him. I like that it is told from different points of view. Readers get to see the many ways that Auggie either sees himself or is seen by others.
  • The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky because this is a great coming of age tale. I learned so much from this book and I'm sure many others would too. It's one of my favorites.
  • Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins because the story of Anna is so delightfully entertaining. I loved it.
  • Me and Earl and the Dying Girl by Jesse Andrews because it is a comedic take on dealing with a friend who has been diagnosed with cancer. I laughed so much when I read this book.
  • Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver because sometimes life is fragile and you don't want to regret your past during your final days on earth.
  • If I Stay by Gayle Forman because realizing how heartbreaking complete and total loss is can really make a person think about how things can change in an instant.
  • Love Letters to the Dead by Ava Dellaira because sometimes death isn't something we can understand right away. This book is so hauntingly beautiful.
  • How to Love by Katie Cotugno because sometimes a first love deserves a second chance, even if it ended badly.
  • It's Kind of a Funny Story by Ned Vizzini because realizing that you need help can be the beginning of everything.
  • Twenty Boy Summer by Sarah Ockler because it's another great coming of age tale that deals with loss and love.
I know quite a lot of them deal with depression or different kinds of abuse, but I think subjects like that are important to read about because they happen so often today. I've loved every single one of these books and I really think that they are books that should be passed around more often.
